Review: Red Lanterns Vol. 3: The Second Prophecy trade paperback (DC Comics)

Not to repeat myself, but I haven't been satisfied with Peter Milligan's Red Lanterns series since the beginning, and the only reason I didn't drop it with the second volume is because Red Lanterns Vol. 3: The Second Prophecy ties in to the "Rise of the Third Army" and "Wrath of the First Lantern" crossovers (completist that I am). This third book doesn't fare much better, both in telling a meandering, too-decompressed story and also in too many subplots that never actually pan out.

Neither the Green Lantern: New Guardians series nor Red Lanterns are particularly well-treated by the culminating storylines of Geoff Johns's Green Lantern run. Both books are tertiary to the "Third Army/First Lantern" storylines; in both, the characters from each series make only small cameos in the stories' resolutions. New Guardians is the better story, not brought down by the vagaries of Red Lanterns, though surprisingly Red Lanterns is the more connected of the two, with an aspect of the "First Lantern" story tying (just barely) into the climactic Green Lantern #20.

As with most of the other third volume Green Lantern books, Second Prophecy collects issues #0 and #13-20 of the series, plus the aforementioned Green Lantern #20. For most of the Green Lantern books, issue #16 marks a cliffhanger before the end of "Third Army" and issue #17 starts in another place with "First Lantern"; Milligan, to his credit, gets around this by having Red Lantern Atrocitus send the resurrected robot Manhunters to Oa in issue #16 instead of going himself, such that Atrocitus's story continues uninterrupted through the whole book.

The "Third Army" story involves Atrocitus resurrecting the Green Lantern Guardians' Manhunters -- his sworn enemies, responsible for killing his family -- in order to pit them against the Guardians. For my tastes, Milligan would seem to over- and under-emphasize the wrong things here. For all the book's navel-gazing, there's not much discussion of the morality of Atrocitus turning to these genocidal robots for assistance; at the same time, Milligan uses three issues on Atrocitus recruiting the Manhunters, including a couple of fights and an imaginary sequence, when some of that fluff could likely have been cut back.

The "First Lantern" story reads as equally thin. Milligan takes an entire issue for Atrocitus to dig underground and find the Guardians' "Great Heart," only for it to be immediately stolen by the First Lantern in the next issue. The First Lantern shows Atrocitus a vision of his life if his family hadn't been murdered, in which Atrocitus becomes a dictator and his family murders him, leading Atrocitus to "choose" the current reality. Ridiculously, this causes Atrocitus to now blame himself for his family's murder and to order the Red Lanterns to kill him, effectively committing suicide.

The Red Lanterns comply without question, but in the span of an issue again Atrocitus has "found himself" and regained control of the Lanterns. The motivations of the characters shift with the story -- Atrocitus wants to die, then he wants to live; the Red Lanterns are happy to kill their boss, then to follow him again -- and it's hard to feel for the characters when they're so ephemeral.

This is not even to mention the side trip that Red Lantern Bleez and the human Red Lantern Rankorr make to Earth, in which Bleez wants to steal Rankorr's powers, he stops her, and then ... really nothing. Dex-Starr, Atrocitus's loyal companion, goes to Earth to find Stormwatch's Midnighter and ... kills someone else instead and that's it; that more is not later made of the fact that Dex-Starr is willing to kill Atrocitus on command is a missed opportunity.

Also, a running subplot of Red Lanterns since the second book has been the Five Inversions, demons who gave Atrocitus his powers, poisoning the Red Lantern battery and slowly taking over the Red Lantern corps. Chalk it up, perhaps, to Milligan's run on Red Lanterns coming to a maybe-sudden end, but in the issue #20 finale, the Red Lanterns finally go up against the Inversions and ... beat them handily. It's a too-cutesy end to what seemed like a serious storyline, and for me the resolution fell flat.

There is some good suspense right at the very end in Red Lanterns #20, when Sinestro murders all of the Guardians but leaves one for Atrocitus. Throughout Red Lanterns and even in Atrocitus's Green Lantern appearances before that, Atrocitus has sworn he'd kill a Guardian in revenge for the actions of the Manhunters, and finally he stalks the last of those Guardians. I felt rather mixed emotions here; on one hand, it's a brutal scene and no one wants to see a little blue Guardian executed, but on the other hand, for Milligan to have had Atrocitus turn away from killing the Guardian after all this time would leave Atrocitus's arc unresolved. Milligan does have Atrocitus murder the Guardian and the moment comes off earned and appropriate, and up until the conclusion I felt quite riveted, unsure what would happen.

I like the Red Lanterns characters very much -- Atrocitus, Bleez, Rankorr, and the rest -- and I regret that I never quite got the swing of Peter Milligan's run on the title. I tend to wish writers would stay on titles longer (though twenty issues is nothing to sneeze at), but in concluding with Red Lanterns Vol. 3: The Second Prophecy, I think it works out. Red Lanterns continues, but under a different team; hopefully Charles Soule and company will have new life to bring to the title.

Number 1597: When Flash got the "F" out

This is the final posting from our “Aces Up My Sleeve” theme week, featuring early stories from the Ace Comics line.

This is the issue where Flash Lightning became Lash Lightning. No explanation...it just was.

It is also a story with inconsistencies which seem jarring. Lash drives a car to the Army base. But he can fly and uses that power when he is blocked from entering in his car. Why drive? To show that the road to the base is blocked appears to be the only reason. And the evil Mastermind, who can “project himself anywhere” can project himself on the base, but then climbs into the commanding officer’s window the old-fashioned way.

Despite those weaknesses in the writing, the art is by comics journeyman Jim Mooney, and it is excellent.

Review: Injustice: Gods Among Us Vol. 2 hardcover/paperback (DC Comics)

It feels like writer Tom Taylor has less set-up to do in the second volume of Injustice: Gods Among Us, especially in terms of the tragic deaths that catalyze the piece, and this allows for more of your standard superhero fare for the reader to get behind. Injustice is the pro wrestling of the DC Comics set right now (appropriate for a comic based on a fighting video game), a book enjoyable largely in how over-the-top and "wrong" it often is. Taylor writes a convincing Superman vs. Batman story here; this is not "our" Superman and Batman, nor would we ever want them to be, but I found this a credible take on what a conflict between these two heroes might be like.

There's a few sequences in Injustice Vol. 2 where Superman and Batman work to one-up one another. Batman kidnaps one of Superman's allies and replaces them with a spy; Superman attempts to reveal to the world Batman's identity; Batman brings the Justice League watchtower crashing to Earth. If we turn our heads and squint a little bit, and tell ourselves this is not the shining Man of Tomorrow and the noble Dark Knight, there's something engaging about this conflict of brawn versus brains, each of them convinced of their role as the hero of the story.

Taylor nicely complicates the conflict, as when Batman and his team break into the Fortress of Solitude wanting to steal Superman's secret weapon, but their efforts are misconstrued as trying to harm Superman's parents. At the (cold, cold) heart of the book, each hero wants desperately for the other to understand their point of view; this could be written as just a story of Bright Hero A versus Dark Hero B, but the layers of past friendship that the reader brings to a tale of Superman and Batman give their conflict extra depth.

Much of the plot of Injustice Vol. 2 turns on that secret weapon, a "magic pill" created by Lex Luthor (Superman's buddy, apparently) to give normal people super-powers to help Superman fight his war on crime. I don't know to what extent the magic pill corresponds to the Injustice video game, but I can extrapolate a certain logic here -- Black Canary can't reasonably go up against Superman in the game, but by fiat of a magic pill (no less ridiculous than any other solution), those match-ups become feasible. I haven't played Injustice, but I sense Taylor gets closest to a real approximation of the gameplay in the annual collected here in which a powered-up Harley Quinn fights Lobo. That's a ridiculous match, but then again putting Harley and Lobo together in a story makes a certain amount of sense, and herein one begins to see Injustice's appeal -- no rules also means no limits to the storytelling.

What's to the benefit to the story, of course, can also be its drawback. That Taylor portrays, in another instance, Ma Kent, Pa Kent, and a hologram of Jor-El all hugging over their concern about Superman is a wildly imaginative scene, and exactly the kind of thing you might never see anywhere else that Injustice should strive for. On the flip side, however, is one of the concluding scenes where Superman breaks Batman's back over his knee Bane-style, simultaneously horrifying and ridiculous, which might be pegged as appropriately over-the-top or gruesomely irreverent, depending on your point of view. And not to be outdone, Taylor finishes the book with a sequence where a super-powered Alfred (yes, Alfred) punches and kicks and head-butts Superman to a pulp. Again, there's something fantastically outrageous and also very, very wrong with the story here.

What generally sells me on a "wrong" story of this type (Judd Winick's Catwoman Vol. 1: The Game is another that comes to mind) is whether it's apparent to me that the authors understand the kind of story they're telling. It's fitting that the book starts with a Shazam (nee Captain Marvel) story in which Billy Batson interviews people about their perspectives on Superman's dictatorial ways, ending with a pseudo-conversation between Billy and Shazam/Marvel himself. Billy remarks, "I don't think someone as young as me is supposed to see this stuff ... I think it's affecting me." Taylor, in essence, gives the book a warning label; this is rough stuff, by design, but it's not blithe about it (Alfred bashing in Superman's face notwithstanding).

Injustice ought end the debate (though it probably won't) as to whether superheroes should kill. Taylor brings Apokoliptian blowhard Kalibak to Earth, raining down destruction with his Parademons, even as he chides Superman that he knows Superman won't kill to stop them (setting aside that, at least in the New 52, Parademons are robots). We see here quite clearly the slippery slope; Superman does not want to kill, but having already killed the Joker, murder as a viable solution becomes easier and easier, and Superman indeed kills the Parademons. A little while later, Taylor offers a scene in which Superman and the Flash play chess, and Superman proposes destroying all guns; here, Flash demonstrates the slipper slope himself by asking Superman if they'd next outlaw cigarettes, or lock up people who speed in cars, or leave dangerous dogs unchained, or who don't recycle.

Taylor at times makes Superman's hard-line approach in the book very attractive, but he also demonstrates its complete unworkability; there's no scenario in which Superman trying to protect people from themselves doesn't end up in a totalitarianism regime. Taylor populates the story with characters that know this, even on Superman's side, including the Kents, Jor-El, Lex Luthor, and the Flash. What I hope is that Taylor is moving us toward a place where Superman recognizes the contradictions as well; the Injustice game dictates Superman can't change his position, but I would be curious to see Taylor write Superman's dawning insight at the same time.

As with many of DC Comics's digital first books, Injustice straddles the line of being kind-of, sort-of an old DC Universe book. Taylor side-steps much of that with this being an alternate universe, but in flashbacks we see that Superman used to wear his classic underwear-on-the-outside costume and Harley Quinn once wore her clown suit (I'd be pleased to see a Year Zero Injustice story at some point that depicts how the characters went from their previous appearances to these). The Fortress of Solitude here has the classic big key, and Taylor's Jor-El is the old John Byrne version; all of these are nice remembrances of times past, even in a book that for many might sully those memories.

At the same time, Taylor plays fast and loose with established continuity at other times, making that call for a prequel to the prequel even stronger. Most notably, in Injustice Superman and Lex Luthor have always been friends, and Taylor treats it so matter-of-factly that the reader does a double-take; surely that's a story waiting to be told. Also, there's an amusing scene in which we find Huntress and Black Canary, but not Green Arrow, know Batman's identity. It is amusing, but it's hard to imagine the series of events through which Taylor thinks that logically would be the case.

The first volume of Injustice began and ended with some really appalling deaths -- Superman murdering Lois and his child on one end, and Robin Damian Wayne killing Nightwing with an absurd trip-and-fall on the other. In that Injustice: Gods Among Us Vol. 2 skews less tragic, more loony, and with greater emphasis on freedom fighter Batman, I was able to enjoy the story more and feel the "wrongness" less. Injustice will not appeal to everyone, but Tom Taylor piqued my interest this time, and I'd be curious to read the first Year Two volume.

Review: X-Men: Age of X hardcover/paperback (Marvel Comics)

Dystopian timelines are a staple of the X-books. Partly it's because the original "Days of Future Past" story was so well-received, but these stories also fit thematically. If there's any group of characters where Murphy's Law will kick them in their collective rears, it's the X-Men. Some work better than others; for instance, Age of Apocalypse succeeded on an epic scale, while Bishop's future was so generic that it never really got its own timeline name. The X-Men: Age of X event, while smaller in scale than Apocalypse, is definitely in the win column, thanks to both Mike Carey's world-building and a mystery leading up to a clever twist. That it's only six issues long, plus three tie-ins, is a show of restraint; Apocalypse is long enough to fill two omnibuses.

The story begins with Age of X: Alpha, an anthology following four major mutants: Cyclops, Cannonball, Wolverine, and Magneto. This is actually a bit of misdirection; only the last story is really key to the plot. That's not to say that Alpha is a waste of time: Cyclops gets a terrifying new origin as the Basilisk while Wolverine sacrifices his healing factor to stop the creation of the mutant cure. Only the Cannonball and Husk story seems extraneous; it's mainly there because the two titles crossing over were X-Men Legacy and New Mutants and at least one New Mutant needed to be in the lead-in. Magneto's story ends with a scene similar to the climax of the "Days of Future Past" film but in a larger scale as he abducts New York skyscrapers to build a fortress of refuge for mutantkind.

We pick up three years later as humans and mutants are at a stalemate: the humans attack Fortress X, and the mutants defend it with overlapping psychic and physical shields. Magneto is growing impatient, Legion is a constantly-shirtless hero, Rogue has become the memory-absorbing "Legacy" and the Fortress' most feared fighters are what we would call the New Mutants. The appearance of Kitty Pryde and a camera full of hazy pictures of the outside world bring chaos into an already untenable situation. Legacy's investigation into the mystery puts her at odds with "X," the mysterious force that controls the Fortress, until she finally finds a man in the brig whom she doesn't recognize: Charles Xavier.

One reason why Age of X is so enjoyable is because it keeps a brisk pace, using the introduction of various characters to also set up the central mystery. Suddenly seeing people like Moira MacTaggert alive again keeps the reader occupied; it's not even clear that there is a secret behind the story until the very end of the second part. Once that's in place, the threads start to unravel as Xavier regains consciousness, Legacy finds more evidence of how strange their world is, and X tries to stop them in their tracks by manipulating others. The truth finally comes out: Moira's responsible! Except that it's not really Moira . . . it's a facet of Legion's personality that's taken her shape. It's yet another story where Legion is at the core, but while it was a little incongruous in Fall of the New Mutants, it's built up to better over the course of this book.

Carey also makes sure to explain what the stakes are and exactly what's happened to the world. Essentially, Legion has separated Utopia Island from the rest of the world and created a false reality wherein he is the hero he always wanted to be. This has been foreshadowed with his shirtlessness and people name-dropping him in otherwise unrelated conversations. Legion can warp reality to a massive scale . . . but he's not great at details. That's why Kitty Pryde could escape and why Xavier still exists in the Age of X timeline.

The manipulation also has consequences; when reality returns to normal, everyone still has their memories. This means that the former supervillain Frenzy still remembers being married to Scott Summers, potentially throwing a wrench into the Cyclops/Emma Frost relationship. Others have further changes: Chamber, formerly of Generation X, regains his old combustion powers at the expense of his rebuilt chest and face. This isn't an event that can be written off and forgotten as "just a dream." This kind of ending also doesn't deflate the story; even classics like "Days of Future Past" can feel a bit hollow once the story is resolved. A recent Uncanny X-Men solicitation hints at something going wrong in Cyclops' mind; it might very well be the return of the Basilisk persona.

Rounding out the Age of X trade are the two "Universe" issues which really should have been put towards the front. They show what happened to the Avengers, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange in this timeline. By the time you read the stories here, the twist has been revealed, so it becomes a little unclear about how much of these stories actually happened. They technically take place in Legion's head as the backstory for his own little fan-fiction universe . . . except that they also feature a few mutants. While the Avengers tale is quite sadistic and the Doctor Strange/Dazzler story is just dull, Jim McCann and Paul Davidson's Spider-Man story is one of the event's highlights. Hunted for being too similar to a mutant, Spidey sacrifices his life to save the woman he loves . . . a pregnant Mary-Jane Watson. It's as if McCann wrote the story as a big "up yours" to Joe Quesada's treatment of the character.

Despite this odd ending, X-Men: Age of X really succeeds as both a major X-Men story and as a narrative in its own right.

Number 1596: Congo Jack and the green and blue attack

This is the second offering from our theme week, Aces Up My Sleeve, featuring early characters from comics published by Ace.*

Congo Jack did not appear in more than a few issues of Lightning Comics in the early forties. This particular sequence, spread over two issues, has a science fiction setting in an underground kingdom. Congo Jack is kidnapped by green men because he is white. (The green men blow up the African tribesmen they first encounter, all part of the unconscionable racial attitudes of the day...natives were “expendable.”) There is a sinister green man who doesn’t want Jack getting the beautiful green queen’s favor. In the second part of the story some blue dwarfs enter the action. And action there is...Congo Jack is good with his fists and there is a lot of sock-bam-pow going on.

Mark Schneider, who signed both chapters in panels every couple of pages or so, is not credited with comics beyond about 1942. I assume he went into the Armed Services during World War II like so many men, but I have no verification. He was a decent artist, and his work fit in perfectly with the still young comics industry.
